Potter-Dix's Coyote Football team was defeated 33-to-24 by the Hyannis Longhorns Friday night at Combs field in wet and unseasonably cold conditions. At kickoff, the sun had already completely set and a rain that ranged from a drizzle to a fine mist challenged both teams ability to keep their footing and hold on to the ball.
The Coyotes first possession was cut short by a fumble by senior Donnie Moench, and Hyannis was able to capitalize by driving and scoring on a touchdown run to go up 7-to-0 early. The Coyotes were able to then put together a drive, but stalled on fourth down at the Longhorn's 25 yard line.
Hyannis was able to put together a drive combining runs and short passes, culminating with a 16 yard touchdown pass to put the Longhorns up 14-to-0 nearing the end of the first quarter.
The Coyotes caught a break after Hyannis' kickoff sailed out of bounds, and started form the Longhorn's 33 yard line. But after driving the ball inside the Longhorn's five yard line, a fumbled snap gave the Longhorns the ball back on their own three yard line.
The Coyotes broke through the offensive set, and sophomores Jared Anton and Anthony Tovar were able to corral the Hyannis runner in the end zone for a safety to give Potter-Dix their first points and narrow the lead to 14-to-2.
The Coyotes went to work, with freshman quarterback Luke Kasten running and passing for yards, while Anton hauled in passes to move the Potter-Dix squad. By the end of the half, the Coyotes had made a comeback, scoring 16 points against Hyannis' 13 in the quarter, but still trailed 27-to-18 at intermission.
The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter to make the score 33-to-24, and a scoreless fourth quarter for both teams kept the final score in favor of the visitors.
Five lost fumbles for the Coyotes were the difference in this game, stopping drives and giving Hyannis short fields to build an early lead. Kasten was eventually able to find his rhythm, completing 6 of 15 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.
He also had 12 rushes for 83 yards and another touchdown. Kasten and senior Rylan McConnell led the defense with 14 and 19 total tackles respectively.
The loss drops Potter-Dix to 1-and-3 on the season. The Coyotes travel to Creek Valley to face the 5-and-0 Storm in Chappell.
