Two Cheyenne County 4-H members went to the Nebraska State Fair and came home with the gold, well actually a purple ribbon and a blue ribbon.
4-H members modeled for a panel of judges and for a crowd estimated at 1,000 during the Nebraska State Fair. Deanna Horst and Kaylee were among 147 4-H members who participated in the Nebraska State Fair 4-H Fashion Show at Grand Island on Sunday, August 25. The skills judged were on fashion and appearance, and how to look good on a tight budget.
Eddy said local judges pick two categories to compete at the State Fair. This is her fourth fashion show competition. Eddy, daughter of Josh and Jessica Eddy of Sidney, received a purple ribbon in the State Fair 4-H Fashion Show showcasing her consumer skills with a purchased garment.
She represented Cheyenne County in the Shopping and Style category. In Shopping and Style, a contestant is challenged to find a complete and attractive outfit while stretching the dollar to its breaking point. According to Eddy, the source doesn't matter: a discount store, clearance rack at a local store... whatever it takes to assemble an attractive outfit on a budget.
"It teaches you how to save," Eddy said recently.
Horst, daughter of Maury and Diane Horst of Potter, received a blue ribbon in the State Fair 4-H Fashion Show. She constructed a sheik western dress.
"This year, I attended a 4-H sewing camp to learn how to dye material and construct a t-shirt dress. At home, I learned how to sew buttonholes, make a collar and pleats for my Steam Clothing II project," Horst said.
She continued her education in clothing design at home, learning how to sew buttonholes, make a collar and pleats for her Steam Clothing II project. She also completed another year of "Best Buy for your Buck." In the "Best Buy for your Buck," she determined what she had for clothing, what she needed for her project and went shopping on a budget.
"I was then able to style all three outfits in our county fashion show," she said.
She submitted four projects for the State Fair.
Her love of sewing started with her mother encouraging her when she was young.
"I soon grew to love the sewing machine," she said.
She said she likes designing her own clothes, adjusting the pattern and choosing the material to design an outfit no one else is wearing. She said she isn't sure about a career yet, but won't rule out working in textiles.
Eddy has been a Cheyenne County 4-H member for seven years and is a member of the Dryland Toughies 4-H Club. Horst has been a Cheyenne County 4-H member for five years and is a member of the Bunker Hillbillies 4-H Club.
