Legion Juniors Edge Chadron

Sidney’s American Legion Post 17 Junior baseball team hosted the Chadron Nationals last Tuesday, and survived a comeback attempt by the visitors to earn a 4-to-3 victory at Legion Park.

Micah Schneider took the mound and started the game for the Juniors, and pitched four full innings, surrendering just one run off of two hits. Sidney’s offense started hot, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning when Sawyer Dickman doubled to give Sidney runners on second and third.

Two walks in between a strikeout brought home the first Sidney run, then a Jaeden Dillehay single drove in two more to give Sidney an early 3-to-0 lead.

Chadron struck back in their half of the second inning, scoring a run off of a lead off double and a ground out to narrow the lead to 3-to-1. In the fifth inning, Schneider was replaced on the mound by Jaeden Dillehay, and the Chadron squad was able to edge closer by scoring a run off a fielder’s choice. But Sidney responded in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Jacob Dowse scoring on an error by the Chadron first baseman to move the Sidney lead to 4-to-2.

After giving up a double and a single to start the top of the seventh, Dillehay was replaced by left-hander Sam Hashman. Hashman gave up an RBI single to the first batter he faced to narrow the Sidney lead to 4-to-3 with no outs and a runner on third. But Hashman bore down, and got the next batter to line out to second baseman Ethan Reichman for the first out.

A pop fly to short right field kept the runner at third from tagging up and scoring, and gave Sidney it’s second out of the inning. Finally, Hashman was able to get the final batter to hit an easy ground ball right back to the pitcher’s mound, and Hashman completed the play by throwing to first base for the final out of the game, giving Sidney a 4-to-3 victory.

Dillehay had two RBI’s and Dowse scored two runs in the Sidney victory. The Juniors next host B&C Steel Gering on Friday.
