Raiders Win Bayard Meet

Sidney's Red Raider Track and Field team traveled on Friday to compete in the Bayard BCD Meet and both the boys and girls teams took top honors with outstanding performances as the Raiders lead into the District and State competitions.

For the boys, senior Cade Lewis set a personal record, taking first in the 100 Meters with a time of 10.91 while senior Christian Balandran took second in the 400 Meters. Sidney dominated the long-distance events with junior Ben Bashtovoi taking first in the 800 Meters and senior Collin Brauer and freshman Cameron Brauer taking first and second in the 1600 Meters. That was followed by Collin Brauer taking first in the 3200 Meters and freshman Daniel Bashtovoi taking second in the 3200 Meters.

The boys had wins in the 4x100 Meter Relay and the 4x800 meter Relay as well as a second place finish in the 4x400 Meter Relay. The boys dominated the throwing events with senior Lane Hughes winning the Shot Put and seniors Christian Lecher and Arik Doty coming in first and second in the Discus. The Sidney team finished the day with 174 points, far ahead of second place Alliance's tally of 110.

For the girls, the competition was much tighter, with the Sidney squad taking first with a score of 113 points versus second place Chadron's score of 112. The girls only wins came from sophomore Karly Sylvester in the Shot Put, junior MJ Johnstone in the Pole Vault, and the 4x100 Meter Relay team, but the girls consistently scored in most events with multiple athletes finishing in the top six to earn points for the team. In the filed events, finishing first and second in the Pole Vault and second through fourth in the Discus was the difference that enabled Sidney to edge Chadron for first place.

"We had a great day with 47 Personal Records for the team. Winning the girls and boys both was an amazing accomplishment and we did it in a light program for the kids. We are excited with what we can accomplish at the districts," Sidney head coach Matt McKay said.
