Brauer Wins Three at Best in the West

Sidney senior Collin Brauer led the Red Raider boy's track team to a second place finish with wins in three events at the Best in the West Classic at Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff on Tuesday.

The Sidney girls finished third overall, finishing out a solid performance against the toughest competition in the Panhandle Area.

Sidney scored well in the running events, with Brauer taking first in the 1600 Meters and the 3200 Meters. He also anchored the first place 4x800 meter Relay Team. Senior Cade Lewis bolstered the sprinters with a win in the 200 Meters and a third place finish in the 100 Meters.

In addition to the event winners, Sidney consistently placed athletes in the top six, adding more scoring to the team totals. In the 3200 Meters, in addition to the win by Brauer, senior Carlos Lucero placed second and Cameron Brauer placed fifth for twenty total team points in that event alone.

"We had 26 athletes qualify for the meet, and we came away with 15 Personal Records and five Season Records. Collin Brauer had an exceptional night winning three events, the 1600 meters, 3200 meters, and 4x800 meter relay. He was named outstanding athlete of the meet, which is a huge honor for him as this was a super competitive meet.

Logan Holly competed in four events and had Personal Records in two of them and an Season Record in another. The weather was finally perfect for some fast times and it was an enjoyable night of track," Sidney head coach Matt McKay said,

Leyton's Warrior track and field team also competed in the event with the boy's squad placing 23rd and the girl's squad finishing 17th. Leyton junior Madelyn Watchorn was edged out for first place by .02 of a second in the 100 Meter Hurdles for the Leyton's best performance of the day. Sophomore Dominick Russ placed eighth in the Long Jump for the Warriors only other top ten finish.

Creek Valley's Storm track and field team also traveled to Scottsbluff for the event, and the boy's squad finished 16th while the girls ended the night in 24th place. Senior Cooper Reichman placed third in the 1600 Meters, missing out on a second place finish by less than a second. Reichman also placed eighth in the 3200 Meters and Long Jump, and junior Patrick Hansen placed ninth in the Triple Jump.

For the girls, junior Caitlyn Mueller placed eighth in the 100 Meter Hurdles for the only top ten finish for the Lady Storm.

"Unfortunately, Caitlyn Mueller and Patrick Hansen are both suffering from back injuries, and I know neither of them were satisfied with the way the competed at the meet. Cooper Reichman had an outstanding performance in the 1600 meters, and as a coaching staff we are happy with his effort and development. He ran a decent 3200 meters as well, considering the effort expended during the mile. At this point, we want to get everyone healed up and back to 100 percent before the conference and district meets," Creek Valley head coach Joe Kupper said.
