Weather forecasters are predicting the area to be hard hit by a winter storm set to sweep across the area beginning today and lasting into Thursday.
Blizzard Warnings now in effect starting as early as 6 a.m. today for northern Sioux and Dawes County and including the remaining Panhandle at 12 p.m. All Blizzard Warnings are valid until through 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
The forecast from the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, Wyo. is for heavy snow, blowing snow, and strong north winds of 30 to 40 m.p.h. with gusts to 50 m.p.h., which will create whiteout conditions in some areas beginning today into early Thursday.
NWS warns travel in southeast Wyoming and Nebraska Panhandle will be significantly affected and all unnecessary travel should be cancelled, especially late morning today through early Thursday morning.
NWS predicted 6-8 inches of snow in its forecast Tuesday morning. That, coupled with high winds, could result in drifts of a foot or more.
