Leyton Battles Rain and Cold at Morrill Track Meet

Leyton’s Warrior track and field teams traveled to Morrill on Saturday to compete in the Morrill Early Bird Invitational, and at the end of the day boy’s team placed seventh while the girl’s team placed eleventh overall.

“The day started out on the miserable side with rain and cloud cover, but after a few hours it cleared and turned into a pretty nice day,” said Lady Warrior head coach Jodi Craig.

With weather problems all around the area for the last few weeks, the Leyton team has been limited in their practices, but still gave a great effort.

“There were various events that we had only practiced once or twice due to the weather, but the athletes involved really stepped up and overcame some adversity to perform”, said Craig.

For the Lady Warriors, junior Madelyn Watchorn placed second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17:36 and third in the 400 meters, with a personal best time of 1:06.81.

Senior Destinee Henke placed tenth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:58.97, while senior Mariah Draper placed seventh in the Shot Put with a throw of 28’ 09” and seventeenth in the Discus with a throw of 69’ 05”. Senior Kelcie VanAnne placed eighth in the Long Jump with a leap of 13’, and senior Abbagale Bush placed fourteenth with a leap of 11’ 06”.

The Lady Warrior 4 x 400 meter relay team comprising of Ashton VanAnne, Destinee Henke, Kelcie VanAnne, and Madelyn Watchorn placed sixth with a time of 5:01.57.

For the boys team, sophomore Dominick Russ won the Long Jump with a leap of 19’ 11”, and placed seventh in the 110 meter hurdles and tenth in the 300 meter hurdles. Sophomore Zack Henke placed second in the Discus with a personal best throw of 113’ 11” and sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.09.

Junior Jeremy Carley placed fifth in the Discus with a throw of 108’ 04”, and seventh in the Shot Put with a throw of 37’01”.
