Sidney school children from kindergarten on up threw their “hats” into the ring, so to speak, joining together to raise more than $1,600 to help with flood victims in eastern Nebraska.
The idea came about last week when school councelor Carla Brauer read an email from Nebraska children’s author Julia Cook of Fremont. Cook, taking an idea from Freemont school children, who held a “Kids Helping Kids- Wear a Hat for Fremont Day!”
Cook spread the idea across her platforms to help raise funds to help children. Those who participate pay $1 to wear their favorite hat to school. All of the money raised will be used to buy clothes, shoes and school supplies for kids.
Sidney K-8 students grabbed onto the idea and ran with it, raising about $1,300 to be distributed through the Kids Helping Kids program.
“They are aware of what’s going on across the state,” said West Elementary Principal Gene Russell. “They were excited to participate.”
On the high school level students also participated eagerly, raising nearly $400. Those funds, said principal Chris Arent, are being donated to flood relief through the American Red Cross.
