Seven Cheyenne County youth were recently awarded certificates by the Cheyenne County Family and Community Education (FCE) organization during their poster and essay contest.
Lillian Dyson, a home-schooled second grader, received first place in the Environmental Poster Contest. Lillian is the daughter of Christopher & Amy Dyson of Sidney. The theme for this year's contest was "What Items Are Made From Recycled Plastic?"
Two students of Vickie Brauer and one student of Karan Clark of North Elementary School were announced winners of the 3rd Grade Essay Contest. This year's theme was "What Items Are Made From Recycled Plastic?" Donald Lawson, son of Marissa Ness of Sidney, received first place. Second place was awarded to Kadence Ross, daughter of Melissa and Brandon Ross of Sidney. Karli Clymer, daughter of Sean and Cassie Clymer, received third place.
Three fifth grade students from Jill Bartling's class in Leyton received awards in the Creative Writing Contest. The theme for this year's contest was "My Favorite Native Nebraska Animal". Quinten Tretter received first place for his essay on the Bald Eagle. Quinten is the son of Kevin & Alicia Tretter of Gurley. Josette McConnell, daughter of Anne Rexroth and Troy McConnell of Gurley, received second place for her essay on Elk. Third place was awarded to Alec Watchorn, son of Ryan and Becky Watchorn of Sidney, for his piece on Bighorn Sheep.
The mission of the National Association for Family and Community Education is to strengthen individuals, families and communities through continuing education, leadership development and community service. The Cheyenne County FCE organization consists of seven members. FCE conducts poster and essay contests each year for youth.
