Sidney Stops Alliance 53-36: Ross Breaks 3-Point Record

Sidney's Lady Raider basketball team pushed their winning streak to 13 by defeating the Alliance Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night in Sidney.

The win moved the Sidney record to 19-and-2 (4-and-0 in district) as they prepare for next week's sub district tournament.

The height advantage of the Lady Bulldogs was not a factor in the game, as the Lady Raiders were able to score inside and hit from long range when necessary.

Senior Meaghan Ross started the game by draining a three point shot, the first of her record-breaking seven on the night, to put Sidney up 3-to-0 in the early going. Alliance battled back to knot the score at 10, but a free throw by junior Jaylee Shaw and a layup by junior Nicole Birner in the closing moments of the period put the Lady Raiders up 13-to-10 and they never looked back.

Although Sidney missed many of their outside shots, they converted on enough of them to continue to pull away while Alliance had difficulty scoring despite their height advantage under the basket.

Ross' third three pointer of the contest in the final seconds of the second quarter gave Sidney a 25-to-17 lead going into the intermission.

The Lady Raiders continued the offensive pressure in the third quarter, with Ross hitting another three and Birner picking up more points by driving the lane. Two more Ross three-pointers as time expired in the third quarter gave Sidney a commanding 42-to-25 advantage going into the fourth period.

Alliance had a run during the last quarter to pull within 12 points of Sidney, but Ross' seventh three pointer of the night with less than four minutes to go put the Lady Raiders up 50-to-35, and prompted head coach Tyler Shaw to pull the starters and let the substitutes play out the rest of game. Sidney earned the victory with a final score of 53-to-36.

Ross was sharp all night, scoring 21 points on seven free throws, eclipsing the record of six in a game set by Ross in the 2016-17 season.

The Lady Raiders next face Chadron at Sidney High School tonight (Friday).
