Leyton's Lady Warrior basketball team came out of their second place finish in the MAC Tournament and earned two more wins, defeating Minatare and Sedgwick County by big margins.
The Lady Warriors hosted the Lady Indians of Minatare last Friday, and the results were familiar to anyone who has followed the teams' rivalry for the last few years. A slow, defensive oriented start had the teams close at the end of the first period, with Leyton ahead 10-to-9.
The teams battled throughout the second period, and Leyton was able to add to their lead to go into the half on top 23-to-19. But, as history shows, the third and fourth periods were again owned by the Lady Warriors and they left no doubt as to the outcome of the game, putting up 39 points in the half against Minatare's 18 to take the victory 62-to-37. Leyton junior Madelyn Watchorn again played well against the Lady Indians, leading the team with 21 points in the victory.
On Tuesday, Leyton traveled to Sedgwick County to face the Lady Cougars, shutting down the Lady Cougars' offense while ending the quarter with a 17-to-5 lead. Sedgwick was able to put points on the board, but Leyton kept their offensive rhythm going and went into the half leading 33-to-15.
Even though the Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Warriors 18-to-17 in the second half, Leyton earned the win by a final score of 50-to-33. Watchorn again had a stellar game, knocking down 32 points while converting 6-of-8 free throws in the victory.

Boys Drop Two
Coming out of their fourth-place finish in the MAC Tournament, the Leyton Warriors boys basketball team hosted the Minatare Indians Friday, then traveled on Tuesday to face the Sedgwick County Cougars.
Friday's contest against Minatare had the Warriors struggling from the outset, with Minatare's defense causing turnovers and bad shots while the Indian's offense began to find their form. Leading 12-to-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Indians turned up the offensive pressure and put up 22 points in the quarter against the Warrior's eight. A 34-to-11 lead at halftime was more than the Warrior's improved play in the second half could overcome, and Minatare took the victory by a final scor of 53-to-36. Sophomore Dominick Russ led the Warriors with 12 points, including three three-pointers.
On Tuesday the Warriors traveled to Colorado to face the Sedgwick County Cougars, and started the game with a solid defensive performance. However, the Cougar's defense only allowed five points for Leyton in the first half. Down 21-to-5, the contest ended with a 41-to-17 final score in favor of the Cougars. Russ again led the Warrior's scoring with eight points in the loss.
