Carol K. Christjans - Obituary

Carol Kay (Lorenz) Christjans, 79, passed away Friday, January 18, 2019 at the Sidney Regional Medical Center.  Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, January 25th at the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church in Sidney with Pastor Mary Jo Dean officiating. Graveside services will follow at a later date in Avon, SD.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Light Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1345 Linden, Sidney NE, 69162, or to an organization of their choice.

Carol was born in Avon, SD on September 15, 1939 to Lester and Raychel (Pritzkau) Lorenz. She graduated from Avon High School in 1957, and attended Mt. Marty College in Yankton SD, graduating with a Degree in Nursing.  She married Don Christjans on December 31, 1959.  Carol worked as a Registered Nurse in Yankton SD, Klemme IA, and Tyndall SD before moving to Sidney in 1969.  

Don and Carol lived in Sidney from 1969 to 1989, raising their family there. Carol was a caring, familiar face to many Sidney residents while working as a nurse in the Sidney Hospital and in the office of Dr.’s Cutright, Cornelius and Akerson.  In 1989 they moved to Las Vegas, NV, where Carol continued working as a nurse and was very involved in church life and PEO.  In 2002 Carol and Don returned to Sidney and enjoyed a life of retirement.  They spent much time supporting their children and grandchildren’s activities.  They loved to travel and enjoyed an active lifestyle. Carol enjoyed walking, biking, playing cards, and reading. She was an active member of PEO.  Carol had a strong faith in the Lord, and loved her family, fall leaves and red licorice.

She is survived by: daughter Janet Volkmer of Sidney, NE, son Tom Christjans and wife Lisa of Hideout, UT; grandson Scott Volkmer and wife Kelsey of Denver, CO; granddaughters Jennifer Sutton and husband Caleb of Sidney, NE, Jessica Christjans of San Francisco, CA, Sarah Christjans of Omaha, NE; two great grandchildren, and her brother, Dave Lorenz and wife Jeaneite of Vermillion, SD.

She was preceded in death by Don, her husband of 50 years.
