The first round of the 2019 MAC Tournament took place on Monday and Tuesday, and no upsets came about at the end of play.
On Monday, the heavily favored Leyton Lady Warriors hosted the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes, and jumped to a fast start, putting the Lady Coyotes in a 20-to-8 hole at the end of the first period.
Things went downhill fast for the Lady Coyotes, as they were only able to muster 18 points in the final three quarters, while the Lady Warriors rolled on to score a 68-to-26 win against their rivals.
Leyton junior Madelyn Watchorn had an impressive 32 points, shooting 67% from the field while knocking down four of six free throw attempts. The Lady Warriors moved on to the semi-finals to face Bayard Thursday night.
The Creek Valley Lady Storm traveled to Bayard for the first round of the tournament, and after a disappointing first quarter that had the team only score two points, found themselves trailing 27-to-11 at the half. Coach Missy Koenen was able to get her girls to score more consistently in the second half, putting up 14 points in each of the final two periods, but it was too little to overcome the Lady Tigers lead, and the Lady Storm fell by a final score of 58-to-39.
The Leyton Warriors boy’s basketball team traveled to South Platte on Tuesday for the first round of the tournament, and came away with a two point win in a close contest.
The Warriors had a slow start, but their defense kept the Blue Knights from pulling away, ending the first quarter down just 14-to-10. Another low-scoring quarter by both teams pulled the Warriors to within one by halftime, 20-to-19.
The Warriors continued their solid defensive play in the second half and were able to get their offense going, led by freshmen Scout Gamble and Jonathan Borges. The Warriors outscored the Blue Knights 26-to-23 in the second half to earn a 45-to-43 win, and advance to the semi-finals of the MAC tournament against Bayard on Thursday.
The winless Potter-Dix Coyotes boy’s basketball team traveled on Tuesday to Garden County, and quickly found themselves outmatched by the number two seed. The Coyotes were unable to score effectively versus the tough Eagles defense, and lost the game 56-to-11. Garden County advanced to the semi-final round and faced Creek Valley on Thursday.
