The Potter-Dix Coyote basketball teams went winless Friday and Saturday, with both squads falling short against Leyton and Hay Springs.
For the boys, the Coyotes could not recover from a 19-to-5 first quarter lead by the Warriors, trailing at halftime 31-to-12. The Coyotes could only manage three points in the second half to fall 58-to-15. Freshman Anthony Tovar led the Coyotes scoring with seven points, while sophomore Dominic Russ led the scoring for Leyton with 18 points.
The Lady Coyotes tried to get their first win of the season against the rival Lady Warriors, but again could not figure out the Leyton pressure, and fell behind quickly with a 20-to-8 deficit at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Warriors put the clamps down defensively, only allowing another four points to go into the half up 34-to-12. Potter-Dix had no answers in the second half, and and fell to the Lady Warriors in a 68-26 final. Leyton junior Madelyn Watchorn torched the Lady Coyotes for 32 points on the night.
On Saturday, the Coyotes hosted the Hay Springs Hawks, and were able to keep close to the visitors for most of the first half, to trail 38-to-26 at the intermission. The Coyotes could not stop the Hawks scoring in the second half, giving up 23 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach, and falling by a final of 77-to-49. Tovar again led the scoring for Potter-Dix with 15 points in the game.
The Lady Warriors looked to get their first win of the season against the winless Lady Hawks, but could not make the defensive plays when they need to, and could not get any consistency on offense. The first half ended well for the Lady Coyotes, narrowing the Lady Hawks lead to close within 20-to-13 at the half. But turnovers, missed shots, and an inability to get inside against the Lady Hawks sent the Potter-Dix squad down to another defeat, with Hay Springs taking the victory with a 46-to-25 final score.
