Warriors Drop 3 in 2019 Start

Leyton's Warrior boy's basketball team struggled in the beginning of their season with just two wins, and had to travel on Thursday January 3 to face a very tough Haxtun team to start the 2019 portion of their schedule.

Haxtun came out fast, stifling the Warrior's offense while scoring at will to open up a 32-to-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Leyton was able to settle down in the second period, scoring 10 points while holding the Fightin' Bulldogs to only 15 to go into the half trailing 47-to-10.

Haxtun rolled up another 21 points in the third quarter on their way to a 76-to-18 rout of the Warriors. Sophomore Zack Henke led the Warriors scoring with six points, and was 2-for-2 at the free throw line.

Leyton had a chance to bounce back on Saturday against a Hay Springs Hawks team that had underperformed, but came out slow and found themselves in a 34-to-17 hole at halftime.

The Warriors had their chances in the third quarter as their offense kept up the scoring pace, but their defense was unable to stop the Hawk's attack, and Hay Springs put up 26 points in the quarter to go into the fourth with a 60-to-34 lead.

The game was out of reach, but the Warriors fought back against the Hay Springs substitutes, whittling away at the lead. But it was too little, too late, as the 27 points the Warriors scored in the last period was only good enough to keep the final score respectable, 72-to-61. Sophomore Dominick Russ and Henke both had 14 points in the loss

The Warriors then hosted a red-hot Bridgeport Bulldogs team on Tuesday night, and after sophomore Henke hit two free throws to put Leyton up 2-to-0 in the opening minutes, Bridgeport responded by opening up their offense. The Bulldogs scored 41 points in the first half, totally dominating the Warriors on offense and defense, and went into the half with a 41-to-10 lead. Bridgeport's big men, lead by seniors Logan Nichols and Drake DeMasters, were too much for Leyton to handle, and they continued the scoring against the Warriors, putting up another 21 points in the third period to eventually come away with a 76-to-21 victory.

Henke again led the Warriors scoring with seven points, pulled down 14 rebounds, and was 3-for-4 at the free throw line in the loss.

Leyton hosts Potter-Dix tonight in their final game prior to next week's MAC Basketball Tournament.
