The Peetz Bulldogs started the 2019 portion of their season with two challenging games against Briggsdale and Merino.
On Friday night, they traveled to Briggsdale to take on the Falcons, and started off slowly but managed to tie the game going into the half 24-to-24.
Peetz head coach Sean Fehringer commented, “You never know what to expect after having so much time off, with the break. Friday night against Briggsdale we got off to a slow start and struggled through turnovers and poor shooting in the first half.”
Peetz’s defense stepped up the pressure in the second half, limiting Briggsdale’s scoring opportunities while the Bulldog’s offense opened up and started to score. The Bulldogs outscored the Falcons 31-to-13 in the second half to coast to a 55-to-37 victory.
“We were pretty balanced offensively and it was a good team win,” added Fehringer.
Peetz next hosted a tough Merino team on Saturday, and struggled both on offense and defense, and got themselves into a battle with the Rams. Peetz scores were followed by miscues and defensive mistakes which kept Merino in the game.
Coach Fehringer explained, “We played a really good team (Merino) on Saturday. We struggled on both sides of the ball all night. When it felt like we may have had some opportunities to put them away we let ourselves down on defense, had some poor shot selection, and turned the ball over way too many times.”
But good teams find a way to win when they’re not at their best, and the Bulldogs showed their grit by hanging in and battling the Rams to the last second, sending the game into overtime. The teams battled back and forth in the final stanza, only to have Peetz hit a last second shot to earn the 72-to-70 win.
Fehringer commented on the victory, saying, “The cards were in our favor and we ended up winning on a buzzer-beater in overtime. Bryson Long stepped up big offensively especially in the 4th quarter and in the overtime period, ending up with 33 points on the night.”
He added, “It’s nice to steal a couple of big wins coming out of Christmas break, but we’re definitely looking forward to some opportunities to get better both offensively and defensively.”
Peetz was scheduled to travel to Fleming Thursday to take on the Wildcats.
