The Cheyenne County Tourism Committee is finalizing design of a local tourism brochure.
The brochure is part of a partnership with BlueSoHo researching the region and developing a brand or identity for Cheyenne County.
Tourism Director Kevin Howard said Friday the committee is reviewing the outline of the brochure, and planning its marketing area. He said marketing of Sidney and Cheyenne County needs to be as far west as west of Cheyenne, Wyo., and east of North Platte. Howard and the committee are also planning print ads in regional publications and a social media effort including ads on Facebook. The Facebook ads will include a link to the Cheyenne County tourism website.
“We’ll be able to track how many land on the website,” Howard said.
This year’s campaign is focused on encouraging travelers to stop from their traveling on Interstate 80. He said this campaign theme is “Travel with You in Mind at Exit 59.”
Howard said the focus will be offering travelers a reason to stop in Sidney. He said once they are off of the interstate or highway, it is easier to get them into businesses and events.
One new aspect to tourism promotion is helping service workers help their businesses and their community. Warren McKnight, also of the Visitor Center, is offering an hospitality training program.
“Service is what we’re going to use to stop people,” Howard said.
The theory is simple, according to McKnight. Treat people well, and know how to direct them to what they need or might be interested in. He said part of the training is letting people know what Sidney has to offer. That, however, takes teaching service workers what is available in the community. Howard said a recent survey indicates Cheyenne County has more than 60 food service locations and more than 600 hotel rooms.
Hal Envoldsen is the chairman of the tourism committee, with Marva Elwinger as vice-chairman. Elected to the board are Bill Taylor from Lodgepole, with Bev Arellano and Sonia Corne as alternates. The Tourism Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Tourism Center.
