King's Daughters Spread Christmas Cheer

More than 100 food boxes were dispersed to needy families recently. The boxes provided an entire Christmas meal for the receiving family. Each box included ham, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, and pie. In addition to the meal, the box included milk, bread and eggs.

The food was purchased from local stores by funds from the King's Daughters fall donation drive.

Prior to the Christmas food box distribution, treat bags and cookie trays were delivered to shut-ins, elderly residents and those in the community who could use a little cheer. Poinsettias were delivered to people who have lost loved-ones during the year. Christmas decor was hung at all three nursing home and assisted living locations. Each resident was presented a small gift as well. Mittens and warm accessories were collected and given to Sidney schools to help children needing winter clothes.

The King's Daughters programs succeed with the support of the community. Donors from throughout the community generously support the group financially along with CA Story Foundation and Dress Down Day funds. The City of Sidney crews as well as the staff from Sonny's and Safeway were the elves behind the scene, transporting food to the distribution point and then assembling the food boxes.

For more than a century, the King's Daughters have have offered food and friendship, and lent a helping hand to community residents who down on their luck or simply alone at heart. The Sidney Wide Awake Circle of King's Daughters was founded in 1891 by military wives of Fort Sidney soldiers. The Circle continues to assist those in need not only during the Christmas season but throughout the year people with needs such as utilities or medical needs.

Donations are accepted year-round to address outreach efforts. Anyone who wishes to donate may contact King's Daughters P.O. Box 823 Sidney, Neb 69162.
