Foundation Dinner Supports Education Projects

The Sidney High School Commons Area was transformed Thursday from cafeteria tables to banquet seating as the Sidney School District Education Foundation held its annual foundation dinner.

The evening began with a social hour and appetizers as guests and supporters viewed numerous items available for the silent auction. The silent auction tables had everything from wall decorations to Cornhusker basketball tickets. Coffee was served as people mingled between the silent auction and the appetizers.

Foundation President Don Cruise said proceeds from the event go to student scholarships. After the dinner, Cruise said about 100 tickets were sold. He added some families donated without attending the dinner. Proceeds from the dinner itself total almost $5,600, according to District Superintendent Jay Ehler.

"They believe in what [the Foundation] is doing," Cruise said.

Cruise said in addition to student scholarships, the Foundation is supporting the Sidney High School choir, which has been invited to attend Carnegie Hall next spring.

The dinner was a plate of beef brisket surrounded by scalloped potatoes, and hand-peeled carrots following a plate of salad. After the main course, dinner was concluded with a slice of New York cheesecake and coffee.

During the dinner, supporters were entertained by students performing Christmas-themed songs. Sophie Price opened the entertainment with "Let It Snow," followed by Madison Fehringer singing "Do You Hear What I Hear?" Taylor Stokes sang "Please Come Home For Christmas," Ricky Onate played "Frosty The Snowman" on trumpet, Taighlor Arnett followed by an improv combo including music teacher David Mead. Taighlor Arnett came back on stage to perform "Winter Wonderland," "Jingle Bells" was performed by combo of musicians, Ricky Onate and Taighlor Arnett performed "White Christmas."

The musical performances were wrapped up by Sophie Price, Taylor Stokes and Taighlor Arnett singing "White Winter Hymnal."

Foundation supporters were then invited to the auditorium to view "Gilligan's Island," performed by the Sidney High School drama department.
