The shingle is out. The vacancy sign is lit.
The Cheyenne County Tourism Committee is looking for people interested in promoting the county.
The committee is seeking two members and two alternates, according to Tourism Director Kevin Howard.
“The alternates have a place on the table. They just don't have a vote,” he said.
Each position four years. People interested in volunteering should have a love for Cheyenne County and its people and history. A committee member should also be interested in seeing the county and its communities prosper. Tourism is an increasingly important part of the local economy.
The Tourism Committee is a seven-member board that advises the Cheyenne County commissioners on how to spend Lodging Tax funds. The Lodging Tax is generated from hotel rooms rented in the county. Two to three of the members can be from the lodging industry.
Committee chairman Hal Enevoldsen said the board is seeking people who are volunteers in their community, and have connections with civic groups in Cheyenne County.
“I think they understand volunteerism if they are already involved in that capacity,” Enevoldsen said.
He said the committee is seeking someone familiar with Cheyenne County and the many tourism assets being developed, or at least willing to attend the attractions, activities and events. He added the Tourism Committee would benefit from having a representative from several different communities in the county.
“This helps make the committee aware of the events and tourist attractions in each town and keeps us apprised of any changes,” he said.
The Tourism Committee meets at least once a month, discussing marketing and promotional opportunities for Cheyenne County tourism, and give direction and input to the tourism director. The committee makes recommendations to the county commissioners regarding grant applications for Tourism Promotion Grants and Tourism Improvement Grants. The grants are for promoting tourism and improving tourism attractions. The committee attends tourism events, conventions and trade shows. In addition, the Cheyenne County Tourism Committee is a member of the Western Nebraska Tourism Coalition.
