Creek Valley's Lady Storm volleyball team and the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes competed at the D2-11 Subdistrict tournament at Sidney High School on Monday, while the Leyton Lady Warriors traveled to Hershey to compete in the D1-12 subdistrict tournament.
Creek Valley entered the D2-11 tournament as the number four seed and Potter-Dix entered as the number five seed, and Leyton was seeded third in the D1-12 tournament.
In the D2-11 tournament, Creek Valley started off against the fifth seeded Minatare Lady Indians, and after a close beginning to the first set, the Lady Storm built a 10-to-5 lead, prompting a Minatare time out. Minatare regained some momentum, but that turned when Creek Valley senior Chloe Mitlehner spiked the ball for a kill to make the score 11-to-7, and kept the Storm's lead to at least five points for the remainder of the set. After winning the first set 25-to-16, Minatare played a much more active set, challenging the Lady Storm the whole way, and took the lead 13-to-12 midway through the set. But the Creek Valley squad regrouped, scoring eight points in a row to regain momentum, and then finish the set with a 25-to-21 victory. The third set started with Creek Valley junior Kayla Collins serving for five straight points and establishing a comfortable lead, but the Lady Indians fought back to eventually narrow the Lady Storm's lead to 15-to-13. But Creek Valley would not falter, and kept the Minatare squad at bay for a 25-to-19 set win and a 3-to-0 match victory.
The next match in the D2-11 tournament had Potter-Dix face off against the number two seeded Garden County Lady Eagles, and the first set was a tight match the whole way through, with Garden County eventually building a lead and the Lady Coyotes mounting a comeback that just fell short, and Potter-Dix dropped the first set 25-to-23. The second set had Potter-Dix start hot and build an 4-to-1 lead before the Lady Eagles came back and tied the set at 8-to-8.
The Lady Coyotes were again able to take a lead, but the Garden County squad again tied the score at 14-to-14, and then went on a run of their own and Potter-Dix was unable to recover, and dropped the second set 25-to-20. The Lady Coyotes again fought hard and traded leads with the Lady Eagles in the third set, but fell behind and were unable to mount a rally and lost the third set 25-to-21 and the match 3-to-0. Potter-Dix senior C.C. George had seven kills and 26 digs in the loss. Potter-Dix ended its' season with a 9-and-19 record, 2-and-3 in district.
Creek Valley advanced to the next round where they faced the No.1 seeded South Platte Lady Blue Knights, and started slowly with a 25-to-11 loss in the first set. Creek Valley head coach Kelsey Kurth regrouped her squad during the break, and the Lady Storm fought hard in the second set, pushing the South Platte team to the breaking point, but Creek Valley fell short at the end of the set and lost 25-to-21.
The third set did not change the Lady Storm's fortunes, as the South Platte team proved too strong for Creek Valley, losing the third set 25-to-18 for a 3-0 loss. Creek Valley ended its' season with a 5-and-19 record, 1-and-4 in district.
Garden County faced South Platte in the championship match on Tuesday, and defeated the Lady Blue Knights in straight sets 3-to-0 to earn the Subdistrict D2-11 title.
On Monday night, the Leyton Lady Warriors made the long trip to Hershey, and faced the number two seeded Brady squad in the second match of the D1-12 tournament. The first set was a dogfight, with the two evenly matched teams battling it out until Leyton finally fell short, 25-to-23 to drop the set. Brady's momentum continued into the second set, and the Lady Warriors were not able to establish their rhythm and dropped the second set 25-to-12. Leyton tried to mount a comeback in the third set, but again the Brady team proved too strong to establish any sustained scoring streaks, and fell short again losing the set 25-to-18 for a 3-to-0 match defeat. Leyton junior Madelyn Watchorn led the Lady Warriors with 12 kills, 15 digs, and 17 service receptions in the loss. Leyton ended its' season with a 19-and-10 record, 9-and-2 in district.
