Vickie Brown - Creek Valley School Board

Series: Local Candidates | Story 9

Why did you choose to run for office? I currently have a 5th grader in the CVS family and wanted to get involved with the school district to ensure that we, as a community, are doing our best to prepare our kids for success after graduation. The role on the school board gives me an active voice in how are schools are meeting the kids needs and allows me to offer advice to improve any gaps.

What skills do you have that you will bring to the office? My skill set, while focused on technology, varies from my experience as an Air Force veteran, my years living in Germany and working for the Department of Defense Youth Services, my undergraduate in computer science and mathematics, and my graduate degree in Computer Information Systems. I have been working for a defense contractor company for the last 18 years and my main focus has been on Cyber Security for IT.

What do you hope to accomplish if elected? Help guide the district in providing a safe environment free of bias whether the student intends to go to college, vocational school, or will join the workforce out of high school.

What are some challenges you hope to overcome? Fear of technology. Fear of failure. Paralysis by policy. While these are bold statements, I would like to create an open environment where all of us: students, teachers, administrators, school board members, and the community can work together to achieve our goals.

What are the most important issues to be addressed by your office? Balancing the needs of the kids while keeping the budget in line. There are political issues that we need to address at a state level but also as a community level. As we gain success in our goals there is a direct impact to the budget and we need to find new ways to accomplish our goals and objectives while minimizing funding in other areas of the district.
