Serving proudly since 1873 as the beautiful Nebraska Panhandle's first newspaper
It started when a friend from the Cheyenne County Community Center asked if he would be willing to drive folks to a couple of events. Before he knew it, Brent Jeffers was asked if he might like to take over as the Center's Senior Activities Coordinator.
Being the person he is, one who enjoys people and seeing them enjoy themselves, Jeffers said "yes."
As the new Senior Activities Coordinator, Jeffers said he would just as soon drop the "senior" part of the title, preferring instead to help provide activities and fun for anyone who wants them.
""I want anybody of all ages to participate," Jeffers said of providing activities.
The Center has become known, particularly in the circle of senior citizens, for providing excursions to destinations from South Dakota gaming resorts to Branson, Missouri's entertainment mecca. But participants have been on occasion, under senior status. And Jeffers wants to build on that.
Since taking over activities planning, Jeffers said he "got excited to the possibility of a lot of things."
To that end, Jeffers is forming a questionaire of sorts to see what the people of the area might like to do. It includes suggestions of trips already taken, but also adds the arts in Cheyenne and Denver, ball games, and other activities.
"I want to know what activities might be interesting to people," Jeffers said. Eventually, he hopes there can be some sort of activity planned for each month, more often if the interest is there.
This weekend, Jeffers is taking a bus full of participants to the area of Nebraska's Junk Jaunt, a 36-town garage sale in central Nebraska. He's also looking forward to next month's planned trip to the Wind River Casino in Riverton, Wyo.
One might think after 40 years in education, 25 of those as a principal, Jeffers would be ready to slow down a little more, but that's not so.
"I just love people and think this is going to be fun," he said of his new endeavor.
