Sidney’s Lady Raider volleyball team hosted the Chase County Lady Longhorns Tuesday at Sidney High School, and won in straight sets 3-to-0. The match featured an exciting comeback by the Lady Raiders in the third set to take the match in a thrilling finish.
The first set started with the teams exchanging scores until the match was tied at 5-to-5, when the Sidney squad put together a string of unanswered points, pulling away from the Lady Longhorns to win the set 25-to-17.
The second set started with Sidney quickly setting the tone, and pulling away from Chase County.
Despite a series of service errors, the Lady Raiders were able to hold off a comeback by the Lady Longhorns, with senior Payton Jung and junior Mattie Johnson rattling off a series of spikes for points that the Chase County squad could not overcome. The set ended with Sidney on top, 25-to-17.
The girls were clearly enjoying themselves and were very loose during the third set, even though they fell behind in the early going of the set. No panic set in when the score was 3-to-13 in favor of Chase County, and the Lady Raiders started to mount their comeback. The battled back, gaining momentum to narrow the deficit to 9-to-14, when junior Sarah Wamsley dropped a service ace into an undefended area, to narrow the lead to 10-to-14.
The Lady Longhorns refocused, and started to pull away again, running the score in their favor to 20-to-13. But Sidney sophomore Karly Sylvester had a series of service points to bring the team back to 17-to-20, breaking the Lady Longhorns momentum and forcing a timeout by the visitors.
The Lady Raiders then poured it on to tie the score a 20, then after a battle that saw the teams again tied at 24, the Lady Raiders secured the last two points to take the set 26-to-24 and the match in straight sets, 3-to-0.
For the next match, Sidney was scheduled travel to Kimball to face the Lady Longhorns Thursday afternoon.
