Stand off Results in Arrest

Early morning on Thursday, Aug. 30, law enforcement obtained a search warrant to search the residence of Jarred Neuhalfen, 26, at 3080 County Road 83, Potter.

Law enforcement attempted to enter the residence, but Neuhalfen refused entry.

His wife left the residence.

Neuhalfen remained inside and refused to leave. A crisis negotiator with the Nebraska State Patrol was on scene and maintained contact with Neuhalfen.

Law enforcement searched a nearby garage and located several firearms. Neuhalfen was previously convicted of a felony. An arrest warrant was obtained for Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, Possession of a Short Shotgun, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. About seven hours after attempting to execute the search warrant, Neuhalfen agreed to leave the residence. He was placed under arrest and taken into custody.

The incident started Aug. 24 when Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Fred Wiedeburg received a message from a Nebraska State Trooper of a suspicious vehicle near Potter. The Trooper received a report from a Kimball County resident of a suspicious vehicle that had been frequenting farmsteads in the area of eastern Kimball County and western Cheyenne County. According to the arrest warrant, Nebraska State Patrol received photos of an un-plated vehicle. Witnesses reported the vehicle was occupied by two men and a woman.

The Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a number of burglaries north of Potter, according to the arrest affidavit. The burglaries include the area west of County Road 99 in Cheyenne County and an incident on Aug. 28. Chief Deputy Wiedeburg was dispatched to Cheyenne County Road 81 north of Potter. Upon arrival, Wiedeburg discovered significant damage to the roll-up door of the garage.

At that time, the only thing determined to be missing was a yellow and white 1996 Suzuki 250cc motorcycle. The home was also forcibly entered, according to the affidavit. Taken from the home was a solar powered LED light and a clear tote with several knives in it. A Cabela’s game camera was taken from outside of the house as well.

The following agencies were involved: Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, Cheyenne County SWAT Team, Sidney Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, Nebraska State Patrol SWAT Team, Nebraska Game & Parks officials, Potter Volunteer Fire Department, Regional West Medical Center Ambulance, Cheyenne County Citizens Emergency Response Team (providing food and water to law enforcement on scene), and High West Energy – Pine Bluffs.
