Sidney Schools Focus on Improvement

Research shows Sidney students at or exceeding state and national standards, according to the 2016-2017 Sidney Public Schools Report Card, the latest report on the website

The report card shows trends in ACT results from 2015-2017. The composite scores for seniors in 2015 were 21.5 with 100 percent of the class tested. Statewide, the percent remained at 21.5 for 2015, but only 88 percent tested. Nationwide, the result slipped by a half point to 21.0 with only 59 percent tested.

Sidney High School's numbers slipped a full point by 2017 - 21.0 in 2016 and 20.5 in 2017. For the state of Nebraska, numbers slipped .1 to 21.4 in 2016 and returned to 21.5 in 2017. Nationally, results slipped to 20.8 in 2016, testing 64 percent of seniors, and 21.0 in 2017 testing 60 percent of seniors.

The 11th grade class of 2017, this year's senior class, surpassed state numbers in nearly every category. Sidney juniors scored 20 in the English Language test, 21 in Mathematics and 22 in Science.

Statewide, students averaged an 18 in English Language, 19 in Mathematics and 19 in Science. The report indicates 33 percent of students are not yet college ready, 12 percent on track for college and 54 percent exceeding normal college readiness. Statewide, 48 percent of students were not ready for college at the time of the test, 13 percent were on track for college and 39 percent were exceeded normal college readiness.

Science scores have Sidney students ahead of the average as well. Sidney's juniors of 2017 scored 22 on the Science ACT, compared to 19 for the state average. Of the students tested, 27 percent of Sidney students were not yet college ready compared to 46 percent statewide. The test results show 27 percent of Sidney science students were on track for college and 47 percent exceeding normal college readiness. Statewide, the science students performed at 19 in the ACT; 46 percent of the students were not college ready, 25 percent were on track for college and 29 percent were exceeding normal college readiness.

The Nebraska Department of Education doesn't release 2018 student performance data until October.
