Sidney’s 12U Cal Ripken baseball team headed to North Platte last week to compete in the Cal Ripken Midwest Plains Regional Baseball Tournament.
Sidney won the Nebraska State 12U title in the beginning of July to earn its’ spot in the tournament, and faced the best 12U teams in the midwest that had also earned their way into the tournament by winning state titles.
The tournament was organized into two four team pools that would eventually narrow to a four team single elimination final.
Sidney started play on Thursday, facing off against the 12U team from Waite Park, Minnesota.
Sidney fell behind early, and struggled to gain any offensive momentum. Waite Park led from the first inning, and Sidney was unable to break through and score against the Minnesota team.
Waite Park finished the contest with a 6-to-0 victory, scoring six runs on ten hits while the Sidney squad was unable to score, and scattered just four hits in the loss.
Next, Sidney faced the team from Mineral Area, Missouri on Friday in the second game of their pool assignment. Again, the Sidney boys fell behind early and found themselves behind 5-to-0 before finally breaking through in the fifth inning to score their first run of the tournament.
Sidney then narrowed the lead in the sixth inning, scoring two additional runs to cut the Missouri team’s lead to 5-to-3. Unfortunately, the Sidney boys could not overcome the two run deficit, and dropped their second game of pool play with a final score of 5-to-3. Although the Sidney team was efficient scoring three runs off of three hits, the Missouri team played error-free baseball, and earned the victory by way of five runs off of seven hits.
Saturday’s game against the Denver Bandits started differently than the previous two, with Sidney grabbing an early 2-to-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Denver’s high-powered offense belted out 10 runs in their half of the first, and Sidney never threatened after the first inning, losing their final game 11-to-3 and was eliminated from the tournament.
