Fair Board Brings Entertainment to '18 Fair

Fair time will include entertainment by an established artist and by an up and coming talent.

The Cheyenne County Fair will include the talent of Rodney Atkins and McKenzie JaLynn Band. Atkins is known for songs such as "Farmer's Daughter," "If You're Going Through Hell," and "It's America." "Take a Back Road" (2011) produced his sixth No. 1 in its title track. He has received six nominations from the Academy of Country Music.

The McKenzie JaLynn Band is lead by 17-year-old McKenzie JaLynn. She and her band are being considered for three for the fifth annual Nashville Universe Awards Show to be held in May. Awards they have been nominated for include Rising Star: McKenzie JaLynn, Female Vocalist of the Year: McKenzie JaLynn, and Vocal Group of the Year: McKenzie JaLynn Band.

Their music includes "Danglin," "Back Then," "Keepin' It Country," and "Burnin' Moonlight."

The concert is planned for Friday, July 20 with The McKenzie JaLynn Band taking stage at 6:30 p.m., followed by Rodney Atkins at 7:30 p.m.

Fair week also includes barrel racing on July 18, truck and tractor pull on July 19, a working class show and an open class horse show. On Saturday, the Demolition Derby will be held at 4 p.m. at the grandstands with the Power Wheels Demo Derby for ages five through 12.

Monday morning, Fair Board treasurer Anita Pennel and the Cheyenne County Commissioners discussed how to make available funds from the Fair Fund to pay bills in a timely manner. Part of the conflict is the 2018 Fair is scheduled after the start of the new fiscal year. The Fair Board operates on a July 1 to June 30 fiscal year.

The Fair Board is allowed $7,000 in the petty cash account, $45,000 per month near the date of the event and $20,000 per month for July and August. The real concern, according to Pennel and discussion at the commissioners meeting, is how to make funds available and keep the budget acceptable for the auditor's review.

Action was tabled until the process can be reviewed.

Pennel said new this year is Appreciation Night when military, law enforcement and first responders will be recognized.

"We have not done this before. With everything that is going on we thought it was time," Pennel said.

In other business, the commissioners received an update from Highway Superintendent Doug Hart and Phillip Black on Adrian Smith's annual Washington update.
