Activity Brings Generations Together

Raiders Reaching Out, a project of the human development class at Sidney High School, is hosting an event Friday that will bring young and old together to share experiences.

The class, along with help from the community, will host a Multi-Generational Prom at the Sidney Elks Club. On tap are dance lessons for those in need, along with hors d’oeuvres, dancing to the tunes from a student DJ, and interaction that class teacher Brett Avila says has been welcomed by young and old in the classes’ previous interactions throughout the year.

Avila said the student-driven project was conceived by students, who chose the interaction with older residents in Sidney and other areas as part of their learning experience.

Through the interaction, class students have already conducted about 35 hours of interviews with an estimated 2,000 people. They’ve learned what people’s lives have entailed, differences between the lives they and their interviewees lived through similar ages, and what people have accomplished.

For the students, Avila said, it’s been an eye opening learning experience, while for those the students visit, particularly senior citizens, “it’s been something they seem to enjoy.”

Avila said the students are looking forward to continuing the project through the “prom,” where they will continue to visit and

learn with those from other generations.

For those who wish to attend, the Multi-Generational Prom will provide dance lessons at 4:15 p.m., with the dance itself running from 5-6:30 p.m. Attendance is free for all ages.

Avila said help is needed for set-up, and those attending may bring food dishes to share. Donations will also be accepted.
