LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Editor,

I see the city council approved LB840 funds to support the hickory square project. They say this comes from the one-half cent sales tax that was approved by the voters in 2012. If the city officials and city council go back and see how this tax was presented and sold to the voters they would see that 50 percent of that tax would go to repair of our deteriorating streets. People would like to know how this LB840 got in there. The city has spent less than one percent on our streets since this tax went into effect in 2013 and has not done any repair work for over four years. The worst streets on the north side are still in dire repair. How many shoes get worn out on the walking trails compared to the tires that get chewed up on our streets? Now the city comes up with LB840 to tap into the taxes that are to be used on our streets and use that on other projects. Now when do we get our deteriorating streets repaired?

Next we see the Hill Side Bar and Grill investors want the city and tax payers to bail them out because they are losing money. They say a contract was written when they built that place and now if you check most of them have left town and want their money back at the tax payer’s expense, they don’t care about Sidney anymore. So if the investors are losing money they need to close the Bar and Grill or fix their problem and not ask the tax payers to bail them out we are too far in debt to bail people out. Jack Schilling, Sidney
