Janice L. Kinney - Obituary

Janice L. Kinney, age 97, passed away on February 18, 2018.

Janice was born to Aaron and Myrtle Zimmerman in Fairfield, Illinois June 6, 1920.

Janice was married to Burel F. Kinney also from Fairfield, Ill. During Burel's service as a Seabee in the Navy during WWII Janice worked as a welder and a wiring installer for a manufacturing facility for army tanks and military aircraft. They moved to Sidney Nebraska where they had a trucking business which they owned until her husband's untimely death in 1956 from an explosion on their property. After managing the business for a few years Janice moved her four children to Lincoln, Ne. in 1961. She returned to college at Nebraska Wesleyan and acquired her Master's Degree in Education. She was a member of the honor societies of Kappa Delta Pi, Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Kappa Phi. She taught English Literature and Business English at Lincoln Southeast High School from 1965 to 1985. She also furthered her education by studying abroad in Europe. Janice enjoyed working in the yard tending her flowers and plants but got the most enjoyment from feeding and watching the birds. She was an avid reader and was always eager to learn. She lived a full life with many different experiences.

Survived by her son Dr. Tedd Kinney and Marilyn Kinney of Bozeman Montana. Daughters Jane Kinney Smith of Lincoln, Ne. and Karen Kinney Rasmussen and David Rasmussen of Bloomington, Illinois. Grandsons, Mark, James and Corey DeBoer of Waco, Texas. Todd Kinney of Bozeman MT, Steven Smith of Lincoln Ne. Nathan Rasmussen of Phoenix AZ. and Niclas Rasmussen of Bloomington Ill. She had 8 Great Grandchildren.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents and all nine of her siblings, her husband Burel, daughter Diane Kinney DeBoer and granddaughter Kierstin Kinney.

As per her wishes she will be cremated then a private family ceremony will be held at a later date. Her ashes will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney, Ne. next to her husband.

A special appreciation to all the people at Country House III who cared for Janice for the past year and a half.
