Creek Valley’s varsity basketball teams both won their respective games Friday night against the visiting South Platte Blue Knights, but in very different fashions.
The Creek Valley boys team (9-9, 3-3 in district) easily defeated the Blue Knights (1-14, 0-3 in district) who had struggled throughout the entire 2017-2018 campaign. Conversely, the Lady Storm (10-8, 3-2 in district) defeated the Lady Blue Knights (9-9, 1-2 in district) in a battle that saw the Lady Storm overcome an early deficit and then hold on for the win as the Lady Blue Knights mounted a second-half comeback.
Both Creek Valley squads gained some needed momentum as the Lady Storm are scheduled to face off against the Leyton Lady Warriors on Tuesday Feb. 13th in the first round of Subdistrict D2-12 Basketball tournament, while the boys are scheduled to wrap up their regular season on Feb. 16th at home against Wallace prior to starting district tournament play on the week of Feb. 19th.
It was Parent’s Night in Chappell as the girls’ squads started the action, with the Lady Storm quickly jumping out to a lead, then the Lady Blue Knights battling back to take the lead and finish the first period up 12-7.
The second period continued this way, but halfway through the period the Lady Storm had tied up the game, then continued to add onto their lead, ending the half leading 28-20 by outscoring the lady Blue Knights 21-8 in the second period.
The second half started with the Lady Blue Knights narrowing their deficit to five, only to have the Lady Storm answer back and increase their lead back to eight points. But then the Creek Valley offense stalled, and South Platte offense took over, scoring 10 unanswered points to knot the score at 33 in the closing moments of the third period. Creek Valley was able to weather the run, then started responding with points of their own as the fourth quarter started.
The teams traded scores for most of the final period, with the Lady Blue Knights narrowing the deficit to two in the closing minutes. But Creek Valley was able to stop South Platte from scoring, and was able to hold on for the win 48-44. Senior Payje Misegadis led the Lady Storm with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.
For the boys, Creek Valley wasted no time in putting away South Platte with a 30 point first period that led to a 38-16 halftime score in favor of the Storm.
The Blue Knights had no answer against Creek Valley’s offensive attack, and were outscored every period of the contest. By the final buzzer, the Storm had notched an impressive 35 point victory with a final score of 72-37. Creek Valley junior Tanner Crass had an outstanding game, scoring 32 points including five three-pointers, along with 12 rebounds and six steals in the victory.
