Cheyenne County Community Center Offers More Than Recreation

As you enter the Cheyenne County Community Center and walk up to the front desk to check in, there's a banner overhead that reads, "Dedicated to serving the health, wellness, educational, recreational, and social needs of Cheyenne County and the surrounding area". If you're a regular visitor, it can be easy to miss. Most likely you're there to work out in the weight room, or shoot some hoops on the basketball court, or you're in a hurry to get to your spinning class before your workday starts. Sometimes we become so focused on the specific reason we've entered the building we forget that the facility has so much to offer, and is a vital hub of activity that serves as a focal point of the community.

Recreation and sports are a primary focus of the Community Center, and for good reason. With a wide range of activities available for children, young adults, and seniors, the center provides a great way to enhance your skills in a particular sport, exercise to get and keep in top physical condition, or to just stay active and have some fun. There are many valuable sports and athletic activities available specifically for children, and for good reason.

"Many of our programs are geared towards children ages five through thirteen because learning the skills necessary to play sports, like mastering a skill through practice, competing with those skills, and learning about sportsmanship and fair play directly translate into lessons that will help children throughout their lives", said Chrissy Hauser, the Center's sports director.

"It's too easy for kids to just to sit in front of the T.V. or a computer and become a couch potato. And with all the smartphones, getting your kids involved in physical activity is so important for their health, and the personal interaction with other kids will help them grow into well-adjusted adults. A computer screen can't offer that", she added.

The wide variety of sports and activities offered to adults are a great way to stay active and socialize with other members of the community. The physical activity keeps you in shape, while the competitive nature of the actives help to keep your mind focused and sharp. Additionally, if you're just looking to keep or get back in shape, the center offers a wide variety of exercise activities. The well-equipped and modern weight room is currently being outfitted with new rubber floor mats, and the renovation is being done in such a way as to not interfere with the members workout routines. A rubberized elevated track circles the entire second floor so you can watch the basketball or volleyball games as you run or walk yourself to better health.

Seniors have a wide variety of activities to keep busy and active while having fun with their friends any time of the day. Activity rooms offer card games, inexpensive meals are available, and exercise classes geared towards seniors are offered daily at 9 a.m. The Community Center is also an approved Silver Sneakers facility, which enables seniors over 65 access to a variety of activities at low to no cost. Additionally, the Center sponsors trips and activities, and provides assistance with medical and financial planning for seniors.
