Split Results In Potter-Dix Vs Leyton Basketball Games

Potter was the setting of the latest installment of the Potter-Dix/Leyton rivalry Friday night as the varsity basketball teams squared off once again on the hardwood. Leyton's Warriors and their faithful braved an unusually cold night to cheer on their teams as they split the two games with home Potter-Dix Coyotes.

The first varsity game of the night pitted the Lady Warriors (7-5) against the Lady Coyotes (9-1), a meeting that could foreshadow a meeting deep into the upcoming MAC Conference Tournament. Leyton opened up the scoring with a quick two points, but the Lady Coyotes answered back with 15 unanswered points extending into the second period. During the second half, the Lady Coyote's shooting cooled off, and Leyton was able to close the gap for a short time, but the home team was able to find their scoring groove again and finish the game up by 16, 40-24.

The boys faced off in the second varsity game of the evening, with similar results, but for the opposite teams. Although this game started out tighter, with a 28-18 lead by Leyton at the half, the Coyotes could not keep up with the Warriors in the second half. The home team's shooting went ice cold, scoring two points to the visitors fourteen in the third, putting the game out of reach. Even with the game out of hand and substitutes playing in the fourth, the Coyotes could only manage scoring five against the Warriors eleven in the final period. With a final score of 53-25 in favor of Leyton, the Warriors improved their record to 2-9, while the Coyotes fell to 2-8 on the season.

Leyton's boys coach Lance Howitt was pleased with the result and commented on the upcoming MAC tournament.

"We know that Potter-Dix enters the tournament as the favorite with the number one seed, but we are happy to have earned the number three seed and have a home game against Garden County. We have lost to both teams seeded higher than us and we just want the opportunity to play again and measure how much we've improved as a team so far this season", he said.
