Leyton's boys basketball steam struggled against non-conference opponents opening the 2018 portion of the the season. Three consecutive losses by the Warriors have dropped their season record to 2-9 overall (2-2 within district). The Warriors played their first game out of the holiday break last Thursday against the visiting Haxtun, CO Fightin' Bulldogs.
Haxtun started fast, scoring and applying pressure defense creating turnovers and missed shots, but near the end of the first period, the Coyotes fought back with four unanswered points to narrow the score to 18-15 in favor of the visitors. But as the second period started, Haxtun took control and pulled away from the Warriors. The Bulldogs' pressure defense stifled the home teams' scoring chances, and the visitors pulled away, going on a 17 point run midway through the period. Haxtun opened up a 25 point lead at halftime, and continued to pour it on, ending the game in a final score of 86-42 in favor of the visitors.
On Saturday Leyton tried to reverse their fortunes against the visiting Hay Springs Hawks. The Warriors kept the game close the entire way, and briefly held the lead against the visitors, but were unable to pull out the victory. This game against the struggling Hawks offered Leyton its best chance at a victory, but the Warriors were unable to prevail, falling to the visitors 41-37.
On Tuesday the Warriors hit the road to take on the Bridgeport Bulldogs, hoping to at least keep the game close against the powerful home team. The Bulldogs ended the first period with a 19-6 advantage, and increased their lead to 31-12 at the end of the half. The Warriors were unable to handle Bridgeport's defense and hot shooting, and the home team tallied 27 points to
the Warriors 6 in the third period. Bridgeport cruised through the fourth quarter to end the game up by 46 points, 70-24. Leyton's boys hope to stop their losing streak as they travel to Potter tonight to take on the Potter-Dix Coyotes.
