Call To Public Service - Guest Editorial

Each of us, regardless of age, experience or circumstances, has something to contribute to his or her community. We are fast approaching the time to file to run or run for re-election for local public offices. Even if you have not considered running for office in the past, now is a great time to think about public service. It is a decision you will not regret because public service is interesting, challenging and rewarding. In western Nebraska, it has grown harder to find people to seek public office and fill these vital roles in our communities. For certain, public service requires a time commitment, but the satisfaction of making the future better for your city or village is immensely gratifying. It is also incumbent upon us to encourage others, especially the next generation, to pursue public service.

There is an intrinsic value to public service at the local level because that is where the work gets done for fundamental services. No community can function without usable roads, water and sewer services. Amenities, such as parks, libraries or community centers, can help a community grow and thrive. At the local level, the rubber meets the road. Your neighbor can visit with you on the sidewalk or at the grocery store about issues affecting the city or village. This is where the common citizen can make a huge impact on a city or village and the life of its citizens. The results are clear and long-lasting. While at the national level, the political dialogue has become discouraging and, at times, depressing. It need not filter down to the local level and keep good people from service. Public service is a most honorable pursuit.

Now is the time to run for the good of your community. You will have resources to help you along the way in the form of capable city or village employees and the League of Nebraska Municipalities, which will explain your duties and will cover a variety of issues and ways those issues can be solved.

We have the tools to help you serve, but what we do not have is you. Please consider giving your time and talents to become an elected official. It is well worth the effort you put forth. Your contributions will help your community be a better place to live today and tomorrow. We need you.
