Raider Wrestlers Win Ogallala Dual

At their season's halfway point the Sidney Red Raider wrestling team is going strong, topping the competition at the Western Trails Tournament Thursday, followed by taking first place honors at the Ogallala Duals Tournament Saturday.

Sidney was led to the top team score at Western Trails, held in Morrill, by senior Kaden Vowers, who collected his 150th career win on the way to the top of the podium at 126 pounds.

Vowers was also a standout in the Ogallala duals tournament where, wrestling a weight higher than normal, he blasted through the 132-pound weight class with five pins. One of those pins was over state-ranked Gothenburg wrestler Wyatt Hotz.

Sidney Coach John Ganzer said the match helped stoke the fire for the Raiders, who he said had their "best weekend of the year" at Ogallala.

Derek Robb continued his perfect season, including four pins at Ogallala. Eleven Sidney wrestlers got pins at Ogallala, with senior KC Higer joining Vowers and Robb in leading the team, Higer with three pins in a 4-1 weekend.

Ganser said he like the energy he saw from the Raiders in Ogallala competition, defeating the strong Colorado teams of Wray and Widefield, "and we came back and beat Gothenburg after they beat us at the beginning of the season," he said.

Sidney is 12-2 in dual competitions so far, with six more coming up between a dual at Bridgeport Thursday evening and the Nebraska-Kearney Midwest Duals in Kearney Friday. The Sidney-Bridgeport dual is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., and the Raiders begin pool competition Friday against South Central at 9 a.m. on a quick turnaround and long bus trip. They follow with Kearney Catholic, and conclude pool competition against Grand Island Northwest at noon.
