There will be a changing of the guard in some elected positions next year, with at least two current office holders choosing not to file for re-election this year.
For 41 years, 42 by the end of her term, Dianne Scott has served Cheyenne County residents in the treasurer’s office, with four terms as County Treasurer.
Scott began as a part-time clerk, pulling license plates in 1976 when all plates were purchased in the first two months of the year. Registrations, titles and other paperwork run through the office were each typed up then.
A lot has changed since then, and Scott, who is leaving to spend more time with family, says she is leaving with “mixed emotions.”
One thing she’s sure about it looking back on her years as a positive experience.
“I’ve met a lot of really good people,” Scott said. “And I have a really great staff.”
Scott will still be around for about a year, until a new treasurer is elected and takes office next January.
Scott’s deputy, Shelley Bowlin, has filed as a candidate for Treasurer.
Another potential change is that of Cheyenne County Sheriff. Early reports indicate that Jenson, who was elected in 2010 and took office in 2011, may not run for re-election.
That report has not been confirmed by Jenson, but one of his deputies, Adam Frerichs, filed for the position this week.
Another county elected official, County Assessor Sybil Prosser, has not filed, but said Wednesday she does intend to do so. This will be Prosser’s first election as Assessor. She was appointed in December 2016 to fill out the term of her predecessor, Louella Pippitt. One of the county’s assessor clerks, Melody Keller, has also filed for Assessor.
So far six other incumbents have shown their intentions to seek office by filing.
