Potter-Dix girls jumped out hard on Creek Valley Friday, then outlasted a late Lady Storm attempt at overcoming the large lead built by the Lady Coyotes early. Potter-Dix moved to 2-1 on the season by virtue of the 35-25 win.
Creek Valley couldn't get anything to go its way in the early going, as the Lady Coyotes played with ferocious full court pressure, denying the Storm any unhurried look at the basket.
Potter-Dix applied half and full court pressure through much of the game, but it was the early pressure that boosted them to a 16-0 first-quarter lead.
Creek Valley didn't make a mark on the score board until three minutes had passed in the second quarter when Jersie Mesegadis made a shot under pressure with 4:48 left in the half. So great was the pressure that senior Payje Mesegadis was fouled on the play. Although she was unable to convert the free throw, she scored on the rebound.
Even with that success, Creek Valley continued to be stymied, trailing 24-9 at the close of the first half.
Creek Valley came out of the locker room with vigor after the halftime break, its passing game sharper and defense much more harassing to the Lady Coyotes. Creek Valley held Potter-Dix to four points in the third quarter, closing the gap to 12 points, 28-16.
"We planned to get out and get the half court trap going and keep pressure on them," coach Lance Juelfs said. "But the next thing you know we were dragging."
Juelfs said while the Lady Coyotes followed the game plan well, "we probably pushed too hard to get it going."
Creek Valley Coach Missy Koenen said for her team, the type of game they normally have was reversed somewhat.
"It's overall the best we've played all year," Koenen said. "But usually we start strong and fall off late. We really need to put four quarters together"
Payje Midegadis led Creek Valley in its effort, scoring nine points, while Jersie Mesegadis added seven and Jordyn Koenen five more.
Potter-Dix got its big boost from senior Audrey Juelfs, who for the third straight contest played the entire game.
The Lady Coyotes had similar success against Paxton Saturday, defeating the Lady Tigers 44-20 to move to 3-1.
Like they did the night before, the Lady Coyotes built a big lead early, 27-8 at halftime, on the way to the win.
Creek Valley's woes continued Saturday against Bayard, where they fell to 0-4 after a 43-32 loss.
Creek Valley bested Bayard in one quarter, the third, but couldn't surpass the Lady Tigers along the way.
Payje Misegadis and Sami Schmid paced the Lady Storm, combining for 21 points.
