The Leyton boys basketball team started strong and outlasted the South Platte Blue Knights 40-32 in a conference match-up Friday. The visiting Warriors outscored the Blue Knights 16-7 in the opening quarter, and maintained their lead throughout the game. The Warriors were led by Senior Jayden Gartner’s 14 points, and Freshman Zach Henke’s nine points from the field.
Leyton Head Coach Bill Willbur has implemented a new system that is beginning to pay dividends. “The kids are becoming more confident and aggressive as they get comfortable with our system”, said Wilbur. He added, “Jayden (Gartner) has come out of his shell over the last few games, and Zach (Henke) is really starting to play well. As we get back more of our guys from injury, our ability to substitute will keep our players fresh and allow them to be more aggressive on the court.”
After opening a nine point lead in the first quarter, Leyton was able to hold off the Blue Knights by dominating the offensive boards and playing tough, opportunistic defense. South Platte’s 20 turnovers and lack of offensive rebounding stopped any chance of overcoming the first quarter deficit.
The Warriors next host Banner County Dec. 15 at 4 pm.
