Workers break out asphalt around a manhole downtown, preparing to set it to grade. The work is one of the finishing touches that will be completed before crews shut down work on the Hwy. 30 replacement through Sidney.
Paving on U.S. Highway 30 should be wrapped up this week, and along with it, the end of a trying construction season through downtown Sidney.
All that's left for this season, says Bucl Simmons, a construction tech inspector with the Nebraska Department of Transportation, is a little finish work prior to shutting down for winter.
The only paving remaining is the completion of shoulders on east Illinois between the railroad tracks and Link 17J.
After that, Simmons said, the contractor will have a little surface shaving to smooth out high spots, and painting of traffic lanes through town. Next spring the temporary painted lines will be replaced with permanent lines placed in the surface.
This week crews are also bringing water valve and sewer access up to grade. In that process, crews cut out pavement, and install manholes and other access points, which are secured with concrete.
The other work crews hope to get done soon is to re-set light poles that are not located in compliance with the widened street in areas. Other than that, one driveway has to be replaced, "and we'll be done for a while," Simmons said.
The remainder of the project will be completed next spring.
