Lady Raiders defeat Kimball in three sets

The Sidney Lady Raiders volleyball team closed out the regular season Tuesday hosting Kimball.

The Lady Raiders swept the Longhorns 3-0: 25-10, 25-9 and 25-17.

Lady Raiders coach Lu Howard said the team entered the game expecting Kimball to be easier competition. She used the game as an opportunity to play team members who don’t get as much play time as more seasoned members. The Lady Raiders defeated Kimball the first time the two teams met, Sept. 21, in two sets, 25-9 and 25-17.

Sidney has earned 780 kills during the season, compared to Kimball’s 410. Sidney also had 125 total blocks while Kimball had 44.

Mattie Johnson leads the team for much of the statistics. She is credited with 250 kills, 62 blocks, 34 serve aces, 304 digs and 260 receptions.

Sub-district playoffs are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Oct. 31. Howard said she expects the playoffs will be in Alliance Tuesday with Sidney’s first game likely against Gering. Gering and Ogallala finished their regular seasons Tuesday, Oct. 24 in a tough match requiring four sets. Ogallala won the match 25-20, 20-25, 25-10 and 25-15.

In the B District 8 volleyball standings, Alliance is first with a 5-0 record, followed by Sidney at 7-3, Gering 2-4 and Scottsbluff 0-6. Sidney enters the sub-district tournament with a 20-12 overall record.

Howard said the ultimate goal is for the Lady Raiders to return to State this year. She said the team will have to work hard to be State contenders.
