Peetz wins gridiron battle against Fleming

FLEMING - If fans of the Fleming and Peetz football teams entered the field Friday expecting the proverbial dog and cat fight, they got their money's worth.

The Peetz Bulldogs traveled to Fleming for a rival match with the Wildcats, and it lived up to the reputation. Statistically, Peetz should have had some advantage. Fleming came into the game with a 3-3 record while Peetz entered the game with a 4-1 season record. However, as is proven in the NFL, "on any given Sunday."

"It is difficult to beat Fleming at Fleming," said Peetz coach Scott Sorensen. "they are well-coached and will never give up."

Friday's game was about the home team defending their field under the Friday Night Lights, and almost getting away with it. Peetz won the game 39-26.

Fleming outscored Peetz in the first quarter 14-8. Peetz then returned the favor in the second quarter 15-8 for a 23-20 half, Peetz in the lead. Peetz held onto a narrow lead in the third quarter, earning eight points to Fleming's six, then ending the game with an eight-point fourth quarter.

Peetz junior Bryson Long, No. 11, lead the Bulldogs' offense against the Wildcats. He finished the game with 192 yards offensively; 140 rushing and 52 receiving. He also had two receiving touchdowns.

Junior Zachary Holtz, No. 5, had two carries for four yards and one touchdown. Senior No. 3 Logan Sircy had three receptions for 30 yards an one touchdown. Senior Tre Fehringer had 101 yards passing.

Defensively, the Bulldogs had 73 tackles against the Wildcats and three sacks. Of the tackles, 62 were solo, lead by senior Helmuth Wenneker's 14. Seniors Sircy and Hunter White had 11 tackles each. White, Sircy and Jake Curlee, all seniors, are credited with one sack each.

Holtz lead the team in points with 14, followed by Bryson Long with 12, and White and Sircy with six each. Holtz also completed four extra-point attempts.

The Bulldogs are at home Friday hosting the Weldon Valley Warriors. Weldon Valley comes to Peetz with an 0-6 season record while Peetz opens the game with a 5-1 season record. Sorensen said with Weldon Valley facing their last game, they may be a dangerous opponent.
