Friday afternoon a bus full of athletes and coaches will head to the other end of Nebraska for Sidney school district's first state athletic competition.
Last week, the athletes, cross country runners from Sidney Middle School, got the invitation to compete against others from across the state in Papillion.
"We have a really good crew that deserves to be rewarded for all of their hard work," Sidney Cros County Coach Donna Wiedeburg said.
The group is "super competitive," Wiedeburg said. It appears Sidney's future looks bright, as group members going to state have placed in nearly every meet this year.
As they have all year, four members of the group were at the front of the pack last Saturday in the Western Conference meet at Sidney's Deer Run Park. Tre Canas, Mitch Deer, Daniel Bashtovoi, and Julian Maytorena, finished second through fourth, respectively at the Sidney meet. In all, Sidney took seven of the top 10 spots, with Isaac Trujillo finishing seventh, Cameron Brauer eighth, and Ryan Konz 10th.
Joining those seven boys at state will be Lydia Peters, who, like the others, has been in or near the top 10 in every meet this season.
The team compete in Papillion at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
