A day of personal bests and fierce competition saw Sidney High School capture two of three conference crowns up for grabs.
Sidney hosted the Western Conference Cross Country meet Saturday, with Collin Brauer cutting 15 seconds off his best time to take the boy's title.
"He had a certain goal," said Sidney Coach Donna Wiedeburg. "He wanted to be under 17 (minutes)."
Saturday's run, said Wiedeburg, was a natural progression in Brauer's year, and going in coach and student both felt the his newest goal was within reach.
"Collin has been that way all year," Wiedeburg said. "He's been real good about setting a goal then meeting it."
From the start, Brauer was near the front, settling a few steps in behind Gering's Xavier Arellano once everyone got into their stride.
The Sidney junior patiently remained there for about half the race, then kicked into the lead near the midway point.
Thanks to the course layout, assembled fans got to see the action unfold because, unlike many other courses, runners came past a central area several times. It was after the fourth pass, entering one of the roughest parts of the course, that Brauer made his move.
In the final 1,000 meters Scottsbluff's Jessee Jaramillo passed Arellano, but was unable to catch Brauer.
Brauer finished with a 16:45.0, nine seconds ahead of Jaramillo.
"I'm just so proud of these kids," Wiedeburg said after the boys' run, which capped a powerful Sidney showing.
The Sidney girls varsity, led by Taighlor Arnett's fifth place and Charlie Brockhaus in eighth, finished second to a strong Gering squad that finished five runners in the top 10, including the winning run by Tukker Romey.
Sidney's middle school runners set the standard with their performance, taking four of the top five places, with seven runners in the top 10.
Tre Cannas led the middle school performance, nearly catching the leader in the kick to the finish. He came up two seconds short, but his 12:06 3,000 meter performance showed Sidney's potentially bright future.
