Sidney volleyball splits in Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic

The Sidney Red Raiders split both contests in the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic.

In July, the Sidney High School volleyball team was invited to compete in the second Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic at the Nebraska State Fair. In the announcement of Sidney being selected to be part of the tournament, Fair events entertainment direct Chelsey Jungck said the Bill Marshall Volleyball Classic is filled with 23 high school teams and four National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics college volleyball teams.

Sidney played Kearney Catholic and Grand Island Senior High School.

"We split both jamboree games today (Saturday, Aug. 26). They missed eight serves in the first match (Kearney Catholic) and only one serve the second match against Grand Island Senior High. We were winning 8-2 during first set of the second match and we lost it 17-25," said Sidney head coach Lu Howard. "We started off great and it was fun to watch. Then our serve receive started struggling."

Howard said the team didn't run too many tandems but overall did well.

"We had some deep corner points and passing was better than at the beginning of the pre-season. They definitely learned a lot in the last few weeks," she said.

Assistant coach Amanda Sharman added the last game was the best for the Red Raiders.

"I wish we could have either played to three sets or a third game," she said. "It was a great preseason experience. Hopefully, our errors will be easy fixes."
