Sidney seniors continue to improve, finish third while hosting tournament

Beginning to find their game, Sidney's American Legion baseball players finished third in their own Senior Baseball Tournament over the weekend.

Sidney opened the tournament by controlling Gordon 12-2 to close the fwirst day of play. In their second outing, the seniors opened up a 3-0 lead over Chappell in the bottom of the first.

Chappell hit the holes in the top of the third to tie the score 3-3, then exploded for 6 runs in the fifth to take a 9-3 lead. Sidney answered with two in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't manage any more in an 11-5 loss.

Lining up against Chappell's sister team, Buckley, in the third place game Sunday afternoon, Sidney put together one of its best all-around outings.

After holding Buckley scoreless in the top of the first, Sidney scored first when Logan Sircy hit a one out single, stole second, and advanced home on an error.

Sidney right fielder Noah Nelson, still learning his position, got plenty of practice in the second inning, catching a deep fly for the first out, then raced to his right for a tough catch and out number two. Buckley went down 1-2-3 when the next batter lined out to Sidney third baseman Arik Doty.
