Striking out cancer was the main goal of a baseball tournament over the weekend that brought 15 teams to play in Legion Park. The tournament, in its fourth year, was a fund raiser with funds going toward local cancer treatment efforts.
Along the way, Sidney’s 12U (12 and under) baseball team ran through all challengers, hardly slowing down on the way to winning its division in the Sidney Strike Out Cancer Wood Bat Tournament over the weekend.
The Sidney 12U squad defeated every team it faced by double digit margins, capping the championship with 20-0 win over Yuma, Colorado. In that contest, Sidney catcher Nolan Hofrock was in the zone at the plate, hitting a home run in each of his three plate appearances.
Also performing well was Sidney’s 10U team, which finished second in its division. In that contest, after trailing 2-0 early, the youngsters used a combination of Gering errors, aggressive base running and key hits to take a 3-2 lead in the third inning.
