For the first time this season, Sidney’s American Legion senior baseball team was able to field nearly its full roster Wednesday as it hosted Bridgeport at Legion Field.
Camps, injuries and the normal range of summer activity had previously prevented all of Sidney’s players from being in the same ballpark at once, and it was a good chance for Coach Ray Witt to get a look at his squad.
“Their timing was off a little bit,” Witt said. “But playing a game like we did, I’m not unhappy.”
Sidney found itself behind early, as Bridgeport jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then added another run in the second. It marked another slow start that has plagued the Seniors so far this season.
But unlike other outings, where Sidney has used its explosive offense to overcome opponents, the Seniors instead chipped away at the Bridgeport lead methodically.
They didn’t have much choice, as Bridgeport pitcher Mason Zorn, who logged 13 strikeouts, kept Sidney in check.
But the Seniors scored one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to close the gap to one point, 3-4.
Sidney bettered its chances in the bottom of the seventh when short stop Logan Sircy reached first on a one out single, then advanced to scoring position on a balk.
