Sidney's Legion Park Pond was a center of activity over the past week, culminating with the Cabela's Kids Fishing Day Saturday.
Setting up the weekend, Cabela's officials and Pleasant Valley Fish Farm's Brian Hahle spent last Wednesday morning stocking the pond, putting 400 fish into the water for the enjoyment of local fishermen. Species stocked included channel catfish, rainbow trout, bluegill, yellow perch, black crapie, and large mouth bass.
As part of the stocking, a number of fish were also tagged. Lucky fishermen catching tagged fish can turn the tags into Cabela's for gift cards.
First to test the waters were area news outlets, who partook of the Media Fishing Day Thursday morning. Members of new organizations including the Sun-Telegraph, KSID Radio, the Scottsbluff Star-Herald and KNEB Radio joined city workers for breakfast, then tried their hands at fishing the pond.
Action turned to the community Friday, when residents of local skilled nursing and assisted living centers were transported for their day of activity. More than 30 seniors took advantage of the opportunity, turning out to catch a number of fish and enjoy the park's ambiance.
"I don't fish anymore, but I like coming out to enjoy the fresh air," said Elanor Einspahr.
Mrs. Einspahr got a treat watching another resident, Ruth Wise, catch the first fish of the day, and follow it with steady stream of catches as she apparently found a honey hole.
Aided by local Boy Scouts, Mrs. Wise and others got plenty of assistance.
